& this is to be My Symphony 2021

Updated: Jan 6, 2021

Have you found yourself wondering what your resolve will be this year? Are you reticent to even make a resolution? Well you're in good company because apparently more than 25% of Americans have not set personal goals for the new year! It's understandable really considering that 80% of Americans that have will fail to keep them past mid-February. So instead of us focusing on a goal or resolving to do/not do something, let us focus on a single word instead. I've witnessed this trend over the last few years and have been thinking about it a lot this last month. My word for 2021 is ampersand. Why ampersand (&)? I've chosen this because I love the inclusion of the word 'and'. Lately I've witnessed so much division-not only in major happenings in our world, but also in seemingly trivial day to day conversations in personal circles. These divisions/variances/ contrasts/oppositions, however they're termed have brought about really shocking behavior witnessed in real life, on social media and news programs! Why do we no longer allow others to disagree with us respectfully? Why are topics so polarizing?

How about resolving to understand each other in the new year and to try to interpret all actions as well meaning instead of looking for the challenge. When did we become a society of dog vs. cat people? of tea vs. coffee drinkers (btw have you tried our teas)? of right vs. left...Let's reflect on ourselves as individuals in the new year and try to not make such divisive comments because change as a nation begins with me and you!

What a difference it would make if everyone in 2021 adopted the more inclusive ampersand as their word of the year, applied it to their vocabulary and made sure their daily lives reflect it... Would you resolve to adopt this as your word of the year? I plan to have a ring made to remind me daily to watch my words- for my words form my actions. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us to "...be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." and 1 John 3:18 says "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth." & this is to be My Symphony!
